“Fun Fact #3: The 1994 winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year Award, Romario, played for Miami FC for the 2006 season. He is also leading a campaign against Brazil hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2014, because he claims the games are immersed in corruption and money laundering.”—
US to host Venezuela & Panama City at the start of 2012
Less than six months before the start of its campaign to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. Men’s National Team will continue preparations with a pair of international friendlies in January.
The U.S. will host Venezuela on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. MT at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Four days later, the team will be in Panama City, Panama, for its first ever friendly against the familiar regional opponent. Further details on both matches will be available in the near future.
The matches will be the culmination of the annual January camp that is primarily composed of domestic-based players, and the matches do not fall on international fixture dates. The next official FIFA date for international competitions is Feb. 29, 2012.
“It’s very important that we start the year off in the right way with a good training camp and two challenging games,” said U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. “We are going to continue to increase the demands on the players and have them develop a better understanding of how we want to play. Venezuela has done well to start World Cup qualifying and they earned a big victory against Argentina. Panama is a team the players know well from the Gold Cup, and we think traveling to Central America before qualifying is important to give them a taste of what the environment will be like there.”
Sorry I’ve been absent for the past few months. I’ve been in law school and basically don’t have time for anything. But fear not! Two more weeks and I’ll be back at filling your dashboards with footie glory!
Vicente del Bosque (VDB) has called up the following players for La Roja’s next two games, the friendly against Chile on Sept. 2 (20:45h) in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and the Euro 2012 qualifier against Liechtenstein on Sept. 6 (22h) in Logroño. Out of the 24 players that make up this list, six are from the Euro-winning U-21 team, including three of their four starting defenders (Dídac Vilà is the missing one, though VDB said he is following him) and Javi Martínez. The majority of the new players are defenders, due to the injuries to Puyol, Piqué, Monreal and Iraola.
Forwards: David Villa, David Silva, Fernando Torres, Fernando Llorente, Pedro, Álvaro Negredo, Juan Mata.
VDB said during the press conference that the absences of Marchena and Capdevila does not mean that “we have ruled out anyone. I wanted to call up some young boys, so that the six champions of Europe could train with us, and we’ll see how things go.”
Diego Forlan and his abs are deserting us, Liga fans.
After four years with Atletico and three years at Villarreal, Forlan is taking his sexy man parts abroad to Inter for two years to see if he can desensitize the Italian women with his golden locks and well, the rest of his celestial being.
We shall miss him. Going to have to start watching Uruguay games. Sigh.
Yesturday I uploaded the Soccernet La Liga BBVA table because Barcelona was mid-table and that felt weird/good. I know, I know, they had yet to play a game, but anyway, I can’t help myself from enjoying a moment like that. Today I will post another pathetic table, from the same site, after the Barcelona game.
I know, I know, still pathetic; one game in makes no difference. But HEY! You’ve got to enjoy it while you’ve got it! TOP OF THE TABLE! HIGHER GOAL DIFFERENTIAL! SEXIER PLAYERS! BETTER GOALKEEPER! PRETTIER KITS!

Captain America is deserting the French and joining the ranks of kilt-wearing soccer studs.
The Scottish club Rangers announced on Wednesday that it has signed USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra for a three-year contract. The defender will join his USMNT teammates Alejandro Bedoya & Maurice Edu and could possibly make his debut in the Europa League game against Slovenian Maribor on Thursday.
Seven preseason games played, seven preseason games won, seventeen goals, two players.
Los Blancos held a perfect record in this 2011/12 preseason, scoring a total of 31 goals in seven games. Seventeen of those are thanks to the scoring duo of Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The two hold the La Liga record for top scoring duo in this preseason for La Liga. Right behind them are Kanoute & Negredo for Sevilla; Van Nistelrooy & Baptista for Malaga; Pereira & Sergio for Betis;, and Osvaldo & Thievy for Espanyol. These four pairs all tie for second place with 13 goals each.
Benzema has scored nine goals, netting braces in three games, and has assisted Khedira, Callejon, Ozil, and Ronaldo.
Cristiano doesn’t fall far behind with eight goals, and has assisted Benzema in his goal against Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande.
Talks between the league & players broke down, & both sides failed to come to a compromise. As a result, this weekend’s games will definitely not be played.
From the league president, José Luis Astiazarán, ”We haven’t reached any kind of agreement. The AFE [union] have dug their heels in. There are important differences, but we will have to continue moving forward.”
